What is a Clinical Trial?
A clinical trial is a research study in which an investigational drug or treatment is tested in human volunteers. The purpose of a clinical trial might be to gather data on safety, side effects or the effectiveness of treatments to determine if the study agent should be approved. Some clinical trials may compare different dosages to determine which works best. Most clinical trials involve treatments that are not currently approved or available.
Why Participate in a Clinical Trial?
Many subjects participate to gain access to promising new treatments before they become available to the general public. For others, this may be another option to explore when they have exhausted the currently available treatment options. The knowledge that they are contributing to science and medical research or helping others with the same disease is another reason for participating.
